Filmmaker and Colourist

Who am I?

John Kelbie is a Scottish director and colourist based in Central Scotland. As a queer and neurodivergent man, John strives to tell stories about those from underrepresented groups. Growing up in the Highlands, he felt he was never truly represented on screen and wants to use his films as a tool to advocate for equal rights for all.

John has directed several films, winning multiple awards for his work and has screened at various film festivals across the globe. His most recent project Bowl, explores a gay man’s desire to return to the world of Lawn Bowls.

Since its completion, Bowl has gone from strength to strength. With several nominations, multiple award wins, and 18 festival selections, including BAFTA-Qualifying Scottish Queer International Film Festival, and BIFA-Qualifying FOCUS Wales Film Festival.

In addition to festivals, Bowl will be screened at this year's Commonwealth Games as part of the games’ Arts & Culture sector and Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival screening in the festival's cinema tent. The film has gained traction from the press and has received support from organisations including Bowl Scotland, Sport Scotland, Leap Sports and Mikeysline.

John is currently working hard at developing his next project Panto. He hopes his future involves more opportunities to collaborate and tell stories about those underrepresented and make a positive change in people's lives.
